The Iguana Research & Breeding Station (IRBS) is an NGO that was conceived and remains today as a voluntary conservation project. Over 1,000 volunteers have worked 365 days a year for more than a decade for the protection of the endemic and critically endangered Utila Spiny-tailed Iguana, Ctenosaura bakeri.

Thousands of "swamper" iguanas have been successfully bred at the IRBS and released back into their natural habitat. Because of our work C. bakeri is recognized in the IUCN's Red List of threatened species, and recently moved it to the Appendix II of CITES.

The Iguana Station also runs the island's only public library, "The Wishiwilly Environmental Education Centre", a free educational venue where the island youth learn about key topics on conservation and climate change. Furthermore, we have organized beach clean-ups, hosted science fairs and conducted numerous research projects. Finally, the IRBS is a key member of the Honduran Volunteer Network: Honduras Voluntaria.
